Beautiful woodblock print by Hasegawa III, Sadanobu Circa 1940's of a Maiko girl - an apprentice geisha in Kyoto and Western Japan. Usually aged between 17 to 20 years old a Maiko will graduate to geisha status after training in traditional dancing, learning to play the shamisen, sing in Kyoto only and learn the Kyoto dialect.
Sadanobu Hasegawa III (1881-1963) followed his father and grandfather into the print making profession. Born in Osaka he became the student of Shijo painter Ueda Kocho, and later the student of Utagawa Sadamasu. Most of his woodblock prints were made after World War II.
